George R. R. Martin: The Elden Ring “Looks Incredible”

George R. R. Martin, the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series (more commonly known as Game of Thrones), has shared his thoughts on FromSoftware’s new game.

Legendary writer George R.R. Martin’s involvement in the game’s development has been no secret, and, of course, there are plenty of reasons to look forward to Elden Ring. Hidetaka Miyazaki has already shown what he’s capable of with the Dark Souls games, and FromSoftware’s latest development is positioned as one of the most anticipated titles of 2022.

On his blog, George R. R. Martin wrote about how the collaboration with Elden Ring began and how it sparked his interest in the game. “Hidetaka Miyazaki and his incredible team of game designers, the creators of the Dark Souls videogame series, reached out from Japan to ask me to help them create the backstory and history for a new game they were working on,” Martin explained.

“I’ve got to say, [Elden Ring] looks incredible” – George R. R. Martin

The writer confessed that video games are not his thing, although he had played a few games years ago, mainly strategy games like Railroad Tycoon, Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Master of Orion, but Miyazaki’s offer excited him so much that he couldn’t refuse. “[They] were doing groundbreaking stuff with gorgeous art, and what they wanted from me was just a bit of worldbuilding: a deep, dark, resonant world to serve as a foundation for the game they planned to create. And as it happens, I love creating worlds and writing imaginary history.”

Martin stressed how long it takes to develop video games, noting that they are now bigger than movies, a long wait for a writer to see what the world he helped create looks like, and now, just months before release, he admitted it “looks incredible”.

On February 25, 2022, we’ll finally get to try FromSoftware’s new game and see if the star author’s enthusiasm is justified… by the way, Mr Martin, when is The Winds of Winter coming out?!
