Titanfall 2: Fans Can Save The Servers… But Only On PC

The Northstar mod could breathe new life into the multiplayer segment of Respawn Entertainment’s otherwise Titanfall 2 fair game.

The mod allows players to start their own Titanfall 2 servers with custom scripts and assets, so they can make unique content while also hosting the original. However, the point is that hacks and DDoS attacks can’t happen without knowing the exact IP address, as the modded servers won’t be on the official list, but the vulnerabilities remain the same. On Twitter, the SaveTitanfall account wrote, “If an attacker wants to crash your server, they will have to track down the server’s IP address. Private games not on the master server will be impossible to track down and crash.”

Here, the Northstar developers have explained how to install the mod. Download the latest version from the releases page. Copy all the files in the newly downloaded zip folder to your Titanfall folder. For Steam, right-click Titanfall 2, open Properties, click Local Files, and browse. For Origin, click Titanfall 2 in the Library, click the gear icon, then click Game Properties. Launch NorthstarLauncher.exe to start Northstar. If all goes well, you will be thanked for installing Northstar, but if you need to add your custom startup parameters, you have to add them in the ns_startup_args.txt text file in the Northstar folder.

The reception on the Titanfall subreddit has been positive, although console users are disappointed. The first part is unlikely to happen, as the server.dll in Titanfall 2 is used in the single-player campaign. Here’s the explanation: “Essentially what Respawn did for Titanfall 2’s single-player campaign was take their server code that was used to host servers for multiplayer games, and just include that with the regular retail version of the game. They just made some modifications to the server binary to allow easy use in single-player; most/all of the multiplayer infrastructure is still there in that local server used for the campaign. For custom servers to be implemented [in Titanfall], server software would have to be implemented from scratch, versus using the server Respawn already made … It’s possible but challenging.” Too bad. The modders can be contacted on Discord, though.
