Is Anbernic Reducing Memory in Its Handhelds in a Dirty Way?

HANDHELD NEWS – Although the company’s devices aren’t quite on par with handheld PCs, many people still choose this category when making a purchase.

It’s worth thinking twice before buying a retro handheld from Anbernic. Some accuse the company of secretly replacing DDR4 memory with DDR3, which would halve the memory capacity. Anbernic has only refuted the latter claim. One Reddit user noted that the RG 34XXSP he purchased came with only 512 MB of LPDDR3 memory, despite the 1 GB advertised on the website. An archive of Anbernic’s website shows that the RG 34XXSP was previously advertised with 2 GB of LPDDR4 memory but now lists only 1 GB. Anbernic told Tom’s Hardware that the current standard memory capacity is 1 GB and that the 512 MB model was an error. The company also stated that it will prioritize replacements for those affected.

Therefore, anyone who has recently purchased an Anbernic device should check to see if it actually has the advertised amount of memory. The downgrade to 512 MB of memory is significant enough to cause practical usability issues. Anbernic has not responded to claims regarding the downgrade to LPDDR3. The replacement of LPDDR4 in the website’s specifications certainly does not paint a positive picture of the memory you can expect in your device. Due to the memory crisis, this means that if you buy a handheld now, you’re getting a worse device for the same price than you would have a year ago.

Many people are upset because Anbernic did not seem to announce this downgrade in advance except for a spec sheet that most people only skim over. If it were a price increase, people would immediately notice, but a simple modification to the spec sheet won’t inform many people about the actual changes.

It would have been fair for the company to announce this change openly. This would have reduced sales, of course, but it would have preserved their reputation.
