The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past: It’s Delayed, But You Won’t Be Disappointed by Its Size!

CD Projekt RED (CDPR) pushed back the release of the latest expansion for The Witcher 3, but, unlike the Fable reboot, it wasn’t due to Grand Theft Auto VI.

 

After unveiling The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s third expansion, Songs of the Past, CDPR revealed more details during the company’s first-quarter 2026 earnings call. The Polish company proudly announced that the tweet quickly became the second most popular and most shared on the series’ official account (surpassed only by the announcement of The Witcher IV), receiving 16 million views in the 24 hours following its release. There is a great deal of pressure to get everything right, which is perhaps partly why Songs of the Past is delayed. Investors haven’t forgotten that CDPR previously hinted at a DLC release in 2026.

“As Piotr mentioned, in response to a question, I believe, we had a moment where our plans assumed that Songs of the Past would be released this year. We decided with the development team that the game will launch in 2027 to achieve the best possible result for consumers, which is ultimately the only thing that matters,” explained Michał Nowakowski, Joint Chief Executive Officer.

Nowakowski addressed the issue of scale, confirming that Songs of the Past will resemble The Witcher 3’s second expansion, Blood and Wine, more than the first, Hearts of Stone. This is undoubtedly great news for fans, as Blood and Wine was significantly more extensive. A full playthrough took between 15 and 40 hours, whereas Hearts of Stone lasted between 10 and 17 hours. CDPR revealed that approximately 190 developers are working on Songs of the Past. Most of them are employed by Fool’s Theory, the company responsible for the remake of the original game. The remake is expected to be released after The Witcher IV, so the current schedule is as follows: Songs of the Past, The Witcher IV, and the remake of the first game.

Further details about Songs of the Past will likely be revealed at Gamescom in the form of a guided demo, as the studio does not consider hands-on demos appropriate for this type of game.
