Is Sony Planning A PlayStation Event For February?

There could be something in store for the PlayStation for the last month of winter: either a State of Play or something even more significant in February, if rumours are to be believed…

Tom Henderson has proved to be an extremely reliable leaker: we have written about rumours that have come true on numerous occasions, and he wrote about them before they became ‘official’. And since he’s been sniffing around PlayStation (however unusual a term that may be…), it’s worth taking what the insider has written about Jim Ryan’s house somewhat thoughtfully…

Henderson wrote on Twitter that current rumours about Sony’s event could be held in February, going by the company’s media events of the month and PlayStation’s history. He said it’s possible that it could end up being just a stream along the lines of a Nintendo Direct (a State of Play broadcast) but added that there’s potential for something much more substantial.

When did Sony officially announce PlayStation 4? February 2013. And this is no exception, last year, we saw a meaty State of Play broadcast, as the company unveiled Sifu and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade in that broadcast, plus confirmation that Oddworld: Soulstorm would be part of the PlayStation Plus offering last April. So there are more examples of Sony generally pushing the second month of the year harder.

So, for example, Horizon Forbidden West may get a deeper gameplay review, which makes sense given that it’s due out on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on February 18. And we can rule out details about PlayStation VR2 almost immediately, as Sony officially named the new VR headset during CES. Hence, it’s too early to reveal any more information about it… but rumours point to it still happening nevertheless.

So there’s still time to end with the obligatory refrain: it’s not official yet…. but something might happen in early February.
