Is The Last Of Us Part II’s Level Designer Working On FireSprite’s Horror Game?

New Sony Interactive Entertainment acquisitions could join the others later this year.

Let’s start with FireSprite. They joined PlayStation Studios last year, and they didn’t sit idle for long: they’re officially helping Guerrilla Games with Horizon Call of the Mountain so that the PlayStation VR2 could be getting a pretty robust game. We’ve also rumoured that they may be involved in resurrecting Twisted Metal. That’s two projects, but they may be holding three marshmallows into the fire simultaneously!

According to a new job posting, FireSprite is working on a AAA, narrative-driven horror-adventure game that will be built using Unreal Engine 5. Their other game, an AAA multiplayer action game (job listing), will also use Epic Games’ new technology. We suspect the latter to be Twisted Metal. And this is where Sony’s investment in Epic Games might make sense: maybe they can get Tim Sweeney’s technology at a discount…?

And how is The Last of Us Part II’s level designer Pete Ellis connected to all this? Well, FireSprite has some experience in the genre (The Persistence was a horror-roguelike from them), and last May, Ellis confirmed on Twitter that he had joined the studio to direct “a story-driven adventure game”. It could be that horror game that is unlikely to be announced anytime soon, as the two other projects could be moving forward…

And this tweet sums up what Greg Miller and Jeff Grubb claim. The former postponed his podcast due to major announcements (Sony did unveil a new PlayStation Plus model). It wasn’t due to Spartacus, but Sony is about to make another significant acquisition, and it could be a major studio. Both have heard this rumour from multiple sources, and although the new fiscal year is now underway (it starts on April 1st for many companies), Sony may yet begin strongly…

We’ll see.
