For Anya Taylor-Joy, The Northman Was Inspiration For Mad Max: Furiosa

MOVIE NEWS – Anya Taylor-Joy reveals how The Northman prepared her for the upcoming Max Max prequel.

In the Mad Max prequel film Furiosa, Anya Taylor-Joy will step into the role played by Charlize Theron in the fantastic Mad Max: Fury Road. In an interview with Total Film, Taylor-Joy explained how working on director Robert Eggers’ upcoming Viking epic The Northman prepared her for what awaits her when she finally stands in the wasteland of the post-apocalypse.

“I remember, there was a very specific moment where I was looking out at all of the green of Ireland, if you’ve ever been lucky enough to visit, it’s a very specific green. And I just remember looking and thinking, ‘I’m not going to see green, or snow.’ It will be a vista this impressive, but it will be entirely the opposite of this wet, fertile place. I’m just like, ‘Wow, okay, I’m really going to experience both extremes this year.'”

“But I’m so excited about it. Both filmmakers have a real ambition to bring fascinating images to audiences.”

“The people that they attract to those experiences are people that share that vision so much that you’re kind of ready to do anything to make it come true. Right?”

Anya Taylor-Joy is visibly eager to jump from the lush greenery and clear, snowy landscape of The Northman to the harsh, warm sands of the Mad Max desert. And it could be a great experience for viewers, too. The actress praised both The Northman director Robert Eggers and Furiosa director George Miller for their shared yet distinctive vision and looks forward to being part of bringing another grand epic to life on the big screen.

Furiosa will follow Anya Taylor-Joy as the titular rebel warrior, who was first introduced to audiences in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. The prequel will explore the character’s origins, long before she became the inspirational handler of Immortan Joe’s War Rig and joined forces with Tom Hardy’s Mad Max Rockatansky. In Furiosa, Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth will play an “atypical” villain, and the film will showcase early versions of previous bad guys such as Immortan Joe.

Starring Alexander Skarsgård, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Ethan Hawke, Björk and Willem Dafoe, The Northman follows a Viking prince named Amleth who escapes his kingdom after the assassination of his father, the king, and vows to return and seek revenge. Years later, Amleth, now savage and violent, discovers that his murderous uncle has lost his kingdom and is now a mere landlord. Amleth poses as an enslaved person to seek revenge, but first, he must decide what to do with his kidnapped mother and young half-brother…

The Northman had its world premiere in Stockholm on March 28, 2022, and is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 22, 2022, by Focus Features.
