MOVIE NEWS – Thandiwe Newton will be replaced by Salma Hayek in Magic Mike 3, but her representative denies the rumours.
Warner Bros. has announced that Hayek will take over Newton’s role, as the actress prefers to focus on family matters. Later that day, The Sun broke the news that there was another reason for the departure, according to a member of the cast and crew, and that was the row between the star and Channing Tatum, the film’s star and producer, over the slap at the memorable Oscars. A cast member said the following to The Sun:
“Channing Tatum is the producer and number one on set. Thandiwe Newton is the number two star. But 11 days into shooting and it’s all over. They fell out over the debacle at the Oscars. I was on set. I watched her and watched him. They were in and out of the house where we were filming having this confrontation. It was a tense exchange of words, but suddenly it escalated — Channing got into this car and he disappeared. People looked at each other and thought, ‘Wait, we’re supposed to be filming.’ After the [argument] he just went, ‘I am not working with her anymore.’ Him being a producer, it’s his movie, so she’s off the movie. She’s gone. Everything we’ve shot for the last 11 days has to be reshot with a new cast member.”
Magic Mike: The Last Dance will indeed be his last.
Not much is known about the upcoming film, but the title suggests it will be the final film in the series. Tatum has also hinted that he will be playing the role of Mike Lange for the last time, and said that the finale will be a big one:
„This one’s going to be a full dance-icle. We’re going to swing for the fence. I’m going to dance as hard as I’ve danced in any movie other than Hail, Caesar! I want this movie to be filled with joy and fun. Everybody is like, “Less character, more dancing.” So I’ve listened.“
The reception to the Magic Mike films has been mixed. Many people criticised the film for lacking depth and being driven only by the visuals. All we know about the new instalment is that director Steven Soderbergh has hinted that Mike will have a romance. The film will not be released theatrically, it will be released on HBO Max later this year.
Until then, fans won’t have to miss Tatum: she can be seen in cinemas with Sandra Bullock in Lost City.
