Netflix Wants its Own Franchises Based on the Star Wars and Harry Potter Universes

MOVIE NEWS – Netflix has outlined plans to create franchises modeled after pop culture phenomena Star Wars and Harry Potter. The streamer has big plans.

In a Reuters report that said the streaming service aims to create franchises that “span across film, television, gaming and consumer products,” Netflix vice president Matthew Thunell said: “We want our version of Star Wars or Harry Potter, and we’re working very hard to create that.” However, Thunell cautioned: “But these cannot be built overnight”.

In terms of genre, Netflix doesn’t plan to copy Galaxy Far, Far Away and the Wizarding World exactly. However, the cross-media approach — Netflix has recently employed in-house booksellers to snag adaptations and created a video game division — aims to be similarly broad. to be.

But not everything will be ripe for franchising. “You have to start with the story itself. Can it sustain this kind of expansion?” According to Thunell. “There are series like Stranger Things that are hugely successful, that have a depth of mythology and additional stories that allow us to move into animated or feature films or anime.”

So Stranger Things seems to prove “A” of Netflix’s new all-conquering approach. Season 5 of Stranger Things will be the series’ last season – but the story does not end there.

The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, recently told the Happy Sad Confused podcast (opens in a new tab) that they have plans for a possible spin-off that will be “1000% different” from the series.

Ross Duffer told SFX Magazine of the spin-offs: “The key for us is that it feels like its own separate thing, rather than retreading what we’ve already done, because what’s the point of that?” I think there is something that could be very exciting. So we’ll see…”

The next Netflix movie, the action movie The Gray Man – starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans and Ana de Armas – will be available on Netflix from July 22. For more from the streamer, be sure to check out the best Netflix movies you can stream right now.
