Assassin’s Creed: Invictus Could Be Free-To-Play; No Assassin’s Creed Remake?

After the French publisher spoke about it at Ubisoft Forward, things are looking up for Assassin’s Creed.

There’s Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, which has been confirmed after a plethora of leaks (and will be $50/euro), and then there’s what promises to be a big project, but is still a long way off, the live service Assassin’s Creed: Infinity (among others), but we’re not talking about these, but about the project codenamed Invictus, which will mainly focus on the multiplayer experience.

Marc-Alexis Côté, Infinity project manager, told IGN that it’s too early to talk about what business model Ubisoft will use for Invictus. Still, the idea of free-to-play (F2P) hasn’t been dismissed: “We have not finalized our plans for the business model for Invictus, but it is a possibility [that it will be free-to-play]. I think the concept art [not shown at Ubisoft Forward but revealed to the press in a presentation] that we had for Invictus kind of hints at this possibility of crossing over characters from different periods. So I think you can see the intention of Invictus allowing us again to bridge our different games together.”

The only problem is that there’s a good chance we’ll have to wait for Invictus (we don’t even know its target platforms), and next year’s Assassin’s Creed: Mirage will be the only AC shortly. So it would be logical for Ubisoft to follow the trends and start re-releasing older titles again. In a video celebrating the 15th anniversary of the franchise this year, the French publisher has shown snippets from the first instalment, but with much more excellent visuals. There have also been rumours that, for example, the Assassin’s Creed: Mirage season pass, which ultimately doesn’t exist, could include an Assassin’s Creed remake or remaster, while others have said the project is in the works, but there’s no word on when it will be released.

Both Côté and Jean-Luc Sala have denied that such a thing is planned. To Axios, the former denied it, while the latter confirmed to Eurogamer that he is entirely focused on Assassin’s Creed: Mirage and that there is no talk of an Assassin’s Creed remake…
