Scalebound: Could The Promising Game Project Finally Be Revived?!

Earlier this year, PlatinumGames publicly called on Xbox to revive the cancelled Scalebound project.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer responded sadly to the above question about Scalebound, saying that he had “currently nothing to say” about PlatinumGames’ desire to revive the game.

Scalebound has arguably become one of the most infamous projects in Xbox history.

Announced for Xbox One in 2014, the game was conceived as a character-driven action game by Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya. However, the project was cancelled in 2017 after a lengthy development period.

Since then, Platinum and Xbox executives have been asked about the project, but speculation culminated in February when Kamiya told IGN Japan that he would like to open talks with Microsoft about the possibility of officially reviving the project.

Kamiya said: “We did a lot of work on it, and it’s no use Microsoft keeping the game in its current form, so we’d like to do something about it (laughs). Phil! Let’s do it together!” Later, he told VGC: “No, it’s not a joke: I’m totally serious about it.”

Now Xbox boss Spencer was asked about the possible revival.

Asked by Game Watch if the promising project could be revived, Spencer smiled and replied (translated by Robert Sephazon), “There’s currently nothing to say about Scalebound.”

Earlier, when asked about the possibility of reviving the Platinum title, Spencer gave a more straightforward answer. “For the people out there thinking that maybe there’s something still in the works: there’s not,” he said when asked about Scalebound in 2020.

Both Xbox and PlatinumGames have previously offered explanations for what happened to Scalebound, but Platinum’s Kamiya recently stepped forward to take sole responsibility for the project’s cancellation.
