Anya Taylor-Joy didn’t call Charlize Theron before filming Furiosa, but the actress “doesn’t blame her.”

MOVIE NEWS – “I understand,” Theron said of Taylor-Joy taking on the younger version of the role of Furiosa. “It’s always a tricky thing.”

Mad Max: Fury Road actress Charlize Theron gave an excellent performance as her character in the rebooted franchise’s first installment. Now Anya Taylor-Joy takes over the role in the upcoming prequel film Furiosa. But Taylor-Joy did not consult Theron during the making of the prequel – but she says that’s OK.

Taylor-Joy will take up Theron’s Imperator Furiosa torch in the upcoming prequel, but the star of 2015’s action-packed Fury Road told The Hollywood Reporter that she understands why the new Furiosa might not have wanted to reach out.

“No, but I understand. It’s always a drag,” Theron told the publication of their latest cover story. “You want to pick up the phone and say, ‘Hey, we’re going to do this without you. Nobody wants to do that. So, I totally understand that.”

Despite not appearing in her character’s prequel, Theron says all is well between her and director George Miller, adding that she’s “not mad” about writing a film that requires a younger actress. “I love George. I know I’ll be talking to him again. I think it was just too hard.”

Although the 47-year-old actress has conflicting feelings about the whole situation, Theron also revealed that she adores Miller’s choice to play a younger Furiosa, specifically “f*cking great acting” in her opinion.

As for Taylor-Joy, the 26-year-old actress told People at the November premiere of The Menu that the two Imperator Furiosas should meet for dinner as soon as possible – and explained why she and Theron haven’t met yet.

“Charlize was quite lovely – I think we both got into a situation where we both respected each other so much that we didn’t want to reach out to each other [before filming]. As soon as it’s over, as soon as this press tour is over, we’ll have dinner together and definitely swap war stories.”

The duo will certainly have plenty to talk about, with the Furiosa star calling the Mad Max universe “epic” beyond words. “I’m so grateful to be here, and I’m so grateful to have worked with the incredible creatives that are the people at Furiosa. The Mad Max world is completely unique and epic, on a scale I can’t even [describe].”

Furiosa hits theaters on May 24, 2024; in the meantime, watch Theron’s character in Mad Max: Fury Road, available now on HBO Max streaming.
