Mortal Kombat and Injustice creative director Ed Boon has hinted at a preview window for NetherRealm Studios’ next game.

 

 

Ed Boon, the creative director of NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat and Injustice, said something interesting yesterday. Many Mortal Kombat fans hoped that a big announcement would be made during The Game Awards 2022, where NetherRealm revealed their previous projects. Unfortunately, NetherRealm did not attend the event. Instead, Boon decided to share news about NetherRealm’s next game in a surprise Twitter “Ask Me Anything”.

The status of NetherRealm Studios has been up in the air since AT&T spun off WarnerMedia and merged it with Discovery.

In a surprise Twitter AMA, Ed Boon candidly answered many questions from Mortal Kombat and Injustice fans. Few expected Boon to answer such a direct question as the release window for NetherRealm’s next project. Boon did reply, “I really shouldn’t 23-answer that.” In other words, Boon hints that NetherRealm’s next game is tentatively scheduled for release in 2023.

Boon’s response, among many others, adds more exciting details about NetherRealm’s work in progress. He said that “Signs point to yes” for a 2023 reveal. However, he also clarified that he “Can’t say” when Mortal Kombat 12 will arrive, and he didn’t say when fans will find out what NetherRealm is working on.

That said, the fact that he hinted on a Twitter thread that NetherRealm’s next game could be announced and released in 2023 is surprising, to say the least.

Boon also dances around topics that have been rumoured for a long without directly addressing them. For example, NetherRealm’s next game will be Mortal Kombat 12, not Injustice 3. Boon answers many questions about Mortal Kombat, but when asked if they’re making Injustice 3, he says he hopes to get the chance. There are also rumours that NetherRealm could be sold, and Boon seems genuinely dubious about future projects and cross-media deals.
