MOVIE NEWS – Gabriel Luna plays Tommy, the brother of Pedro Pascal’s Joel, in the HBO hit series The Last of Us.

 

 

HBO’s The Last of Us has finally arrived after a long production run – here’s our spoiler-free review! And one of the series stars, Gabriel Luna, has reflected on the first time he joined the project. In the series, based on the hit video game of the same name, Luna plays Tommy, the brother of Joel Miller, played by Pedro Pascal. Both characters appeared in the original video game, as did Bella Ramsey’s Ellie, who, alongside Pascal, is one of the main characters in the series.

In an interview, Luna talked about being somewhat familiar with the character, having played the game briefly a few years ago.

The actor explained how he was informed that the makers of The Last of Us series, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, wanted him to play Tommy shortly afterwards. He could not have predicted all this when he initially tried out the game.

“Well, what I knew of Tommy at the onset was about 30 minutes of gameplay that I had back in 2013 when I was visiting Austin for Christmas. I was having a jam session with a bunch of my buddies and we were in between playing guitar, set it down, go sit on the couch. I rifled through all of his games and he had The Last of Us. I threw that in and it was surprising to me that the whole first 30 minutes of the game took place in Austin. I thought that that was really, really cool. I played it. Then, never did play it again until 10 years later when I was, I guess, back in ’21 when we were gearing up to do the show. I was told that [Craig] Mazin and Neil [Druckmann] thought of me for the role and thought I might be good, I might fit as Pedro’s brother, and that there was some interest there.”

When she learned she was being considered for HBO’s big-budget series adaptation, Luna immediately began preparing for the role of Tommy. Before meeting with the show’s creators, she quickly picked up and played through The Last of Us to absorb everything she could about the character. The actor also said that the game was a big part of his preparation for the series.

 

 

 

 

Could fans have found the perfect actress to play Abby?!

 

If you’ve played the second part of The Last of Us, you’ll know that Abby is a crucial character. For the sake of new fans, I won’t dive into spoiler territory, but I will say that we spend as much time with Abby as we do with characters like Joel and Ellie. Given the series’ hype, I imagine many actresses have their eyes on the role. But fans are pretty vocal about their desire to see Abby played by Florence Pugh.

Florence is widely seen as the clear choice to play Abby, but not for nothing – just look at her performances in The Black Widow and Hawkeye.

Most people think Florence is pretty cool. Twitter user SatoruBrojo wrote: “Seeing Florence Pugh in Hawkeye really cemented my opinion that I could totally see her playing Abby in The Last of Us.” At the same time, GabrielDivina2 added: “HBO should cast Florence Pugh as Abby in The Last of Us. I feel like she has the same tough exterior but can still be vulnerable. And we’ve seen her in Fighting with my Family already.”

Brent_Carroll1 said, “If Abby isn’t played by a ripped Florence Pugh, then what are we even doing.” Presumably, the main problem with Florence is that she’s older than Bella Ramsey. So it might not be the most balanced pairing. However, she has really proven herself to be a great actress, and it’s easy to imagine her in the role of Abby.
