Forspoken: Square Enix Can’t Or Won’t Optimise? [VIDEO]

The system requirements for Luminous Productions’ game have been released, but the list is staggering for several reasons.

In the video below, Square Enix shows off the graphics customizability, mentions that AMD FSR 2 gives a refined performance, Samsung SSD support provides solid loading times, DirectStorage is supported, you can play in 32:9 aspect ratio (cutscenes won’t be in it), and Luminous Productions ensured the game couldn’t be played just with a controller but with a mouse and keyboard, too. It’s all well and good, but seeing the system requirements would make you run out of the world (if only because they got here one week before the game was released…).

Minimum system requirements – 720p resolution, 30 FPS frame rate:

  • Operating system: Windows 10 x64 (at least with the November 2019 update) or Windows 11 x64
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-3770 (3.7 GHz) or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 (3.7 GHz) or better
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (with 6 GB VRAM) or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT (with 8 GB VRAM) or better
  • Free storage: 150 GB (SSD recommended)
  • And not mentioned, but Internet connection due to Denuvo

Recommended system requirements – 1440p resolution, 30 FPS frame rate:

  • Operating system: Windows 10 x64 (at least with the November 2019 update) or Windows 11 x64
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-8700K (3.7 GHz) or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (3.7 GHz) or better
  • Memory: 24 GB RAM
  • Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 3070 (with 8 GB VRAM) or AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT (with 12 GB VRAM) or better
  • Free storage: 150 GB (on SSD)
  • Internet connection

Ultra system requirements – 4K resolution, 60 FPS frame rate:

  • Operating system: Windows 10 x64 (at least with the November 2019 update) or Windows 11 x64
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-12700K or AMD Ryzen 5 5800X (3.8 GHz) or better
  • Memory: 32 GB RAM
  • Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 4080 (with 16 GB VRAM) or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT (with 16 GB VRAM) or better
  • Free storage: 150 GB (on SSD)
  • Internet connection

So a minimum of 16 GB of RAM is hair-raising (especially 150 GB of space), and that’s only enough for 720p? Not to mention that the GTX 3070 and the 4080 don’t exist, and they specifically described it that way first, so it’s not like they care about the PC audience (but they need their money). Forspoken is out on January 24 for PlayStation 5 and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store). In the meantime, the PlayStation 5 demo has been improved (button layout can be changed, some text sizes have been tweaked, enemies that exit the screen stay on target longer, and technical bugs have been fixed).
