Coca-Cola Is Overprotecting Its Brand: An Indie Developer Has Spoken Out!

We’d rather believe him than the giant corporation, which seems to be joking around…

How idiotic a move is it for an energy drinks company to complain about an indie game’s title? Well, that’s the case: the developers of Dark Deception: Monsters and Morals have been sued by Coca-Cola-owned Monster Energy over the word Monsters in the game’s title.

*facepalm break*

It isn’t the first time the company has been slammed for the names of other products that differ from its own, but there’s a limit to everything. In the past, the company hit Ubisoft because they previously had a game called Immortals: Gods & Monsters. However, the energy drink company said they were confusing the French publisher’s game with their brand, leading the game to be renamed Immortals: Fenyx Rising.

Monster’s lawyers have a penchant for targeting smaller game studios (so they do it for fun because they have nothing better or more beneficial to do!) for bankruptcy, according to the CEO of Glowstick Entertainment, the developer of Dark Deception: Monsters and Mortals, Vincent Livings. He shared what Monster Energy is demanding of him: if they keep the game name, they should not use the word Monster in any other game in any form or variation, and their games should no longer have a green and white logo on a black background, and the studio should give up the Monsters and Mortals logo…

Livings plans to compete with the company harassing them for their trademark to try to do the impossible for game developers. He wants to help so that others can later fight back against them for the cases they have brought against them. In the meantime, he is asking us to boycott Monster Energy’s products. The company dares to advertise itself as a clean company to its target audience (gamers, athletes), yet it is taking such action.

Hopefully, Monster Energy will lose this case. It’s about time.
