Will The Dismal PSVR2 Sales Cause Sony To Cut Back On Production?

TECH NEWS – According to rumours circulated by some key business insiders, Sony may scale back its production plans for PSVR2 this year.

Although it’s a rumour being spread by some key insiders, a message is circulating that suggests Sony may cut back on production plans for PSVR2. The Playstation VR2 was a sequel to Sony’s original virtual reality headset earlier this year. For several reasons, it may not be off to as good a start as the company had hoped. If the rumours are true.

When the Playstation VR2 was released in February, it only featured a few notable launch titles, the most significant of which was Horizon Call of the Mountain, and it carried a hefty price tag of $549.99.

Although many PlayStation fans have already upgraded to PS5 and may be ready for the PS VR upgrade to PS4. The console-like pricing may deter some of the installers from adopting the enhanced technology. By the end of February, Sony had shipped just 270,000 PSVR2 units. This has sparked rumours that are gaining ground despite Sony denying such drastic changes.

Around the release of the PlayStation VR2, Bloomberg analyst Takashi Mochizuki suggested that Sony was cutting production of the virtual reality device. The technology company later denied this. Mochizuki is not the only known business insider to have spoken about PlayStation VR2 and possible production changes. For example, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also added his own perspective on the likely slow rollout of the hardware. According to Kuo, Sony will cut production of PSVR2 by 20% this year. This is based on sales estimates that appear to have shifted based on demand for the PS5’s high-performance add-on.

Kuo further elaborated on his analysis of PlayStation VR2, claiming that low sales of Meta Quest Pro and the popular Pico headset in China reflect that virtual reality is not a “star product”.

Pointing to Apple as the last potential hope for investors in augmented and virtual reality, Kuo remains confident that a future announcement event could reignite interest in the technology. It is unclear whether Sony intends to cut production by that much or plans to maintain current numbers.

For now, many leaders in the tech industry are focused on VR and the metaverse. Companies like Meta and Sony may have been expecting a wider audience for their latest headsets than they’ve met. However, several prominent insiders discuss PlayStation VR2 and the 2023 production cycle. However, this is all just a rumour until a future Sony earnings report.
