The Night Agent Season 2: What Exactly Can We Expect From The Sequel?

MOVIE NEWS – The new season of The Night Agent has been confirmed just a week after the first season’s premiere. Here’s what to expect from season 2. (Warning, this article contains SPOILERS about the first season’s storyline!)

Season 1 of The Night Agent, which premiered on Netflix in mid-March, received generally positive reviews – including from us – and immediately gained a fan base. Within days of its release, the series jumped to the top of Netflix’s top 10. Thanks to its huge success, the series was renewed for a second season less than a week after its first premiere.

The first season of the series, created by Shawn Ryan and starring Gabriel Basso, follows Peter Sutherland as he becomes embroiled in a political conspiracy.

Answering a single call in his position with the Nightwatch Service throws Peter into a flurry of high-speed car chases, bullets and bombs. All the while, he must protect Rose Larkin and deal with his own personal trauma. In the end, the heroic Peter, who saved the President of the United States, becomes an agent of the Service himself.

What can we expect from The Night Agent season 2?

As Season 1 ends with Peter boarding a plane for his first mission as an agent, we can certainly expect to see how he fares in his new role. On the receiving end of a night action call, Peter is caught up in a massive conspiracy. He was tasked with assignments that his job didn’t demand. If the character managed to put himself in so much danger just by answering one call, there’s no telling what his new role might bring. The end of Season 1 also reveals that Peter’s new mission is outside the airspace of the United States. In light of this, seeing how the character handles danger and trouble in international space will be interesting.

We can also expect to see how Peter handles his new relationship with Rose now that he’s working as an agent internationally. Peter is putting his home country before his relationship, and Rose herself is planning to move back to Silicon Valley and restart her business. But the season finale reveals they do not intend to end their relationship. Producer Shawn Ryan also confirmed that he wants to explore the couple’s relationship in the new season.

Focus on Gordon Wick

When the dust settled at the end of the first season, most of the characters’ story threads were wrapped up nicely. However, Gordon Wick was one character who disappeared into the shadows. Wick, who was an integral part of the series from the beginning, was a businessman who, working with Redfield and Farr, orchestrated many of the series’ murders, including the initial subway bombing.

Given that Wick had enough of a say to influence the actions of the Vice President of the United States, there is no doubt that there is more to the character than was revealed in the first season.

Despite his influential role in the first season’s plot, Wick’s backstory was not given much detail. Nor did we learn how he came to have such a relationship with the Vice President. All viewers saw was that Wick was the CEO of Turn Lake Industries and had maintained a relationship with Redfield over the years. However, the character’s background and exact connections were left mainly vague. The vague backstory, and the fact that Wick conveniently disappeared at the end of the first season, indicate that we haven’t seen the last of the character. Shawn Ryan also hinted at a possible reappearance of Wick.

Chelsea Arrington’s story

Another promising avenue that Season 2 may explore is with Chelsea Arrington. The character was first introduced as secret service agent Maddie Redfield. Initially, she followed Maddie around campus to ensure her safety. But Arrington’s role in the series escalated after Maddie was kidnapped. By the end of the season, Arrington was somewhat central to Camp David. She is also appointed to the President’s security detail after her role in keeping Maddie safe. Her new position raises the possibility that she will work with Peter again, as Peter reports to the President as a night agent.

Arrington’s role and her relationships with other characters in the series suggest that there is a chance she could reappear in the new season.

However, exploring a Chelsea Arrington narrative in Season 2 is still uncertain. In an interview with Deadline in March 2023, Ryan said that he would prefer to tell a specific story in each season of the series. So, for now, Arrington’s future in the series is in question.

At the time of writing, it looks like the second season of The Night Agent could premiere in 2024.
