Henry Winkler Reveals Why Gene Lied in Barry Season 4 Premiere

MOVIE NEWS – The star of the HBO MAX series Barry, Henry Winkler explained why he made up a whole story about what happened between him and Bill Hader’s character, Barry. Gene Cousineau couldn’t resist going to the press, even though his girlfriend’s father explicitly forbade him to do so.

In the fourth and final season of the HBO series Barry, Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) is in prison after Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) reported him for killing his girlfriend, Janice Moss. Gene, however, is not satisfied with that: he tells the press his own version of how he met Barry and how he became his acting teacher. Gene not only portrays himself as a great actor, but also humiliates and mocks Barry.

Henry Winkler gave an honest interview to The Hollywood Reporter about what motivated Gene in this step. He said Gene is a selfish and attention-seeking person who can’t help himself. “Gene is an asshole. He can’t stop himself. As much as Gene wants to be generous, [attention] is like crack for him. He needs that spotlight as much as some people need heroin,” Winkler said.

Winkler added that Gene didn’t report Barry because he felt guilty about his previous sins, but because he wanted to avenge Janice. “No, that was a completely different kettle of fish. He felt as bad as he possibly could, which was not very deep. But Barry killed the woman he loved. After that, all bets are off,” he said.

Gene worked secretly to find a big-name journalist who could sell his story to. When he succeeded, he performed a one-man show in which he presented himself as Barry’s mentor and role model, while portraying Barry as a hapless idiot. Although this was not entirely true – it was more of a vanity project – what is true is that Barry really looked at Gene as a teacher and friend who gave him new meaning and happiness in life.

After the first two episodes of the fourth season, it seems that these steps will have serious consequences for everyone. Not only because Gene betrayed Jim Moss – who can persuade people to commit suicide – but also because such a story leaking out could very anger the cold-blooded killer Barry, who may escape from prison as the series suggests. The series has already shown that Barry turned away from Gene after he not only reported him but also taunted him. In the final season of the series, the story intensifies without being predictable.
