The Outer Worlds 2: The Humor Won’t Be Easy

With the memorable humor of the first part, the bar is set high for the sequel.

Some parts of the story, the references, and the setting could be funny through “the non-Fallout” that the two masterminds of Fallout worked on. The first The Outer Worlds was a tribute to the sci-fi genre, and its world, the Halcyon solar system, drew from many places. Firefly, Futurama, Rick and Morty, and Star Wars, but it also took a few ideas from Fallout itself, not to mention many veiled references. The sequel should continue to make sci-fi references because a lot has happened in the genre since the first installment was released. If Obsidian Entertainment, the game’s developers, have kept track of what’s happening, we can sense it in The Outer Worlds 2.

The “dumb playthrough” in Fallout (especially in the Obsidian-developed Fallout: New Vegas) should not be left out. This phrase has been around since the early Fallout episodes, and it means that the specific abilities of our character are pretty low. Thus certain dialogues open up, leading to hilarious results more than once. The new locations in The Outer Worlds 2 may provide additional opportunities for humor. So it is a fact that new characters and factions will be added. The favorites from the first part might be worth returning to, especially when you consider that the environment in The Outer Worlds can be depressing, and that is why the characters’ humor is a priority. Therefore the characters’ performance in the sequel should be high.

Scientific weapons should receive similar care. They weren’t strong in The Outer Worlds, but they did cause a funny moment or two for players of all kinds because of their ridiculous and enjoyable effects. Obsidian can’t ignore it either, so they have set the bar pretty high with the first installment. We don’t know if The Outer Worlds 2 can raise the bar.
