Id Software Didn’t Work on Starfield’s Combat System, Bethesda Reveals

The Doom and Wolfenstein creators: id Software helped Bethesda with the graphics of their sci-fi RPG.

Starfield is one of the most anticipated games of 2023, promising a huge space adventure from Bethesda Game Studios. The studio behind the Skyrim and Fallout series didn’t hesitate to ask for help from other developers to make the best game possible. A rumor in May claimed that id Software, the creators of Doom and Wolfenstein, intervened in Starfield’s combat system to transform and improve it. Now, however, it turns out that this is not true.

Bethesda boss Todd Howard told IGN in an interview ahead of the Xbox Showcase and Starfield Direct that id Software did help with Starfield’s development, but not with the combat system. “Well, first of all, I’d say knowing the folks at id Software for a long time, I’m a huge Doom fan. They’re the absolute best. Doom Eternal is one of my favorite games.” – Howard said.

“So with Fallout 4, they gave us some tips on how to handle combat. And Starfield, we redid the combat ourselves and it’s really feeling great. But id helped us more on the graphics side.”

Howard revealed that Bethesda had some aspects of the id Tech engine that they wanted to “bring over” into the Creation Engine 2 to improve Starfield’s look and feel. id Software is well-known for its first-person shooters, and Starfield incorporates this type of action into its combat.

“Including motion blur. It’s just how the game feels smooth. And some other things that they do in id Tech that we wanted to bring over into Creation Engine 2, and they helped us do that, and it’s great.” – Howard explained.

Howard also mentioned that he was lucky enough to get an early look at what id Software is doing next year, but he didn’t say anything specific about it. “And I’m such a fan of what they do. So seeing what they’re doing next… I’m not here to talk about that, but just…”

id Software’s last big hit was Doom Eternal in 2020, although it released the full version of Quake Champions in 2022 after five years of early access. The studio has been quiet since then.
