This Year’s Win 4 Handheld PCs From GPD Look Promising

TECH NEWS – GPD will use the latest AMD Ryzen APUs in the device, which will mean powerful performance with low power consumption.

GPD has unveiled its refreshed Win 4 machines. So far, the gadgets have been equipped with an AMD Ryzen 7 6800 APU with a Radeon RDNA 2 graphics chip. The refreshed version looks unchanged but has more modern technology “under the hood.” The significant difference lies in using new APUs (processor and graphics chip on a single die): the 2023 Win 4 can be ordered with a Ryzen 7 7840U or a Ryzen 5 7640U. Both feature the Radeon iGPU using the RDNA 3 architecture, the more powerful 780M in the former and the 760M in the latter.

You can also ask for more memory in the machine, so it can have up to 64GB of RAM, which is a bit excessive for a handheld PC (understandable for workstations, but we don’t carry those around), but there’s a minor change here, too. Previous models had 6400 MT/s memory, but GPD has replaced that with LPDDR5x-7500. There’s also a change in storage, as you can get a portable PC with up to 4TB of PCIe 4.0 SSD, which should easily rival the Steam Deck.

The display measures 6″ in diameter and supports a 40-60 Hz refresh rate. The screen is protected by Coming Gorilla Glass 5, so if you drop it, you might not immediately smash it (that’d be a much higher percentage for a mobile phone). The piquancy of it all lies in the portable PC’s looks. On closer inspection, it’s fair to say it looks like Sony’s PSP! There’s one little plus, though: like the PSP Go, you can slide the display out of the way and get a keyboard.

GPD started crowdfunding on Indiegogo late last year, and the new Win 4 model is scheduled to be released sometime in August. Pricing is not yet known.
