Will Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Be Faithful To The Previous Films In The Movie Series?

MOVIE NEWS – Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is not directed by Matt Reeves, but the film is based on an idea the director had six years ago and is a fulfilment of his vision.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be a direct sequel to War for the Planet of the Apes. The film fulfils the vision Matt Reeves had for the reboot series. The reboot, directed by Rupert Wyatt, came out in 2011 and was surprisingly well received. Especially after the critically panned Tim Burton remake. The film had to completely immerse the audience in an entirely CGI animal protagonist, which was a challenge at the time. What followed were two more films directed by Matt Reeves (The Batman) that were even more exciting and thought-provoking.

Now, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is in post-production and is scheduled to hit cinemas in May 2024.

It would be easy to assume that the film is another reboot, given that it’s been six years since the last film. Moreover, War for the Planet of the Apes brought Caesar’s (Andy Serkis) story to a close. Instead, the film is a direct sequel to the 2017 release. It takes place years after the War when humans have been largely wiped out by monkey flu. Although Reeves’ work on the series has come to an end, the four-part sequel could fulfil the filmmaker’s vision.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes fulfils Matt Reeves’ franchise plan

Reeves had an overarching vision for the series when he took over the franchise, and although that vision seemed to have been fully realised with the last film, he had a specific vision for the direction of the next movie. While promoting the movie in 2017, Reeves spoke about where he sees the series’ future going.

The director said, “There are apes who grew up without the benefit of Caesar’s leadership and they might not just be pockets of one or two, there might be actually colonies, and might that be where future conflicts come for Caesar’s apes?”

In essence, this is the story of the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Because in the 2024 film, several monkey colonies interpret Caesar’s teachings differently. Certain groups of apes twist Caesar’s teachings to suit their own purposes and subjugate other apes. In the world of Planet of the Apes, humans are almost extinct. This means that humans are no longer an enemy or threat to the apes. However, there are different tribes of monkeys. Some that do not look kindly on the more advanced and skilled apes who have learned at Caesar’s command. The forthcoming film will explore the enmity between these colonies, which was Reeves’ idea.

Caesar has a monumental legacy, he’s the world’s most famous ape, and everything he achieved in War for the Planet of the Apes will set off a chain reaction, for better or worse.

In the 2024 film, the fighting groups of apes are thanks to Caesar’s achievements. It’s a clever way to continue the series without the main character. Although Serkis is not in the four-part sequel, he highly praised the story and thinks Kingdom of the Planet of the Ape is mind-blowing.
