Can A Classic FPS From The PS3/Xbox 360 Era Be Resurrected?!

A developer skilled in remastering some of the best classic FPS games ever made is showing interest in a relatively popular 2000s title…

The CEO of Nightdive Studios recently expressed interest in remastering The Darkness, a popular FPS that was released in 2007 for Xbox 360 and PS3. Nightdive Studios has been responsible for several remasters, including the System Shock remake, and would be the perfect choice for such a project.

The Darkness is a classic FPS based on the comic book series of the same name. The game follows the story of Jack Estacado, who uses ancient demonic powers to confront the violent criminals in his own family.

The Darkness’ gameplay blended traditional shooter mechanics with dark, mystical powers to create an exciting combination.

The title received a sequel in 2012, but the IP has been essentially dormant since then.

Now Nightdive Studios CEO Stephen Kick has recently confirmed that The Darkness is “on the list of games” the developer wants to remaster. He was responding to a Twitter user who complained that he really liked playing The Darkness but that it wasn’t supported on modern platforms. Unfortunately, the tweet does not report confirmation of an official port. No specific release date was given, so players will have to wait for an official statement from Nightdive Studios.

Nightdive Studios is one of the most prominent developers focusing on remasters. They have handled many of the best retro FPS games on the market. Some of its previous ports include System Shock: Enhanced Edition, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, Blood: Fresh Supply and Quake 2, for example. However, the company’s most high-profile project has undoubtedly been the System Shock remake.

It was released this spring and significantly improved the graphics and gameplay of the original title, while staying very true to its roots.

Currently, the studio has a few announced projects. These will hopefully be released soon. Among them are System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition, Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion and Star Wars: Dark Forces. The upcoming remaster of Dark Forces was announced last week. During the occasion, a representative from Nightdive Studios stated that the game would cost around $20 to $30. It will aim to keep the original game’s feel while modernizing the graphics and controls to make it accessible to new players.
