PlayStation 5 Slim: An Internet Connection To Pair The Blu-ray Drive?!

Let’s try this: to connect the optical drive to the redesigned, smaller, but no cheaper PlayStation 5, you’ll need to connect the console to the internet…

After a long period of rumors, the smaller, lighter PlayStation 5 has finally been officially unveiled. Although it’s not officially called Slim, we call it Slim out of habit, because there are certain traditions that Sony doesn’t follow, but we do. This time, there will be two versions of the console: one will not have an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive (ie, it will be the Digital Edition) and the other will, but we will have the option of adding an optical drive to the cheaper version, in case we change our minds.

CharlieIntel has shared several images of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III PlayStation 5 bundle on Twitter. That’s not so important, nor is the fact that the bundle, which will be available from November 10th, will require a minimum of 150 GB of space and a minimum of 90 GB to download to play… but there’s a text hidden on the box that we should definitely highlight: “Internet connection required to pair the disc drive and PS5 console during setup”.

This pairing was certainly designed by Sony to combat piracy, which may raise other questions (for example, if someone were to sell the Blu-ray drive separately, would it become unusable if paired with ANOTHER PlayStation 5…?), but it’s certainly a redundant move since not everyone uses their console online (and not everyone has a PlayStation Plus subscription).

On the ResetEra forum, there is also an apt thought: if Sony shuts down the servers, the optical drives will become unusable for preservation or repair, and this will result in e-waste, which is a bad move from an environmental point of view. It’s a shame that Sony is so incapable of an altruistic solution, because they are so keen to get into digital gaming… and that’s why you can’t use an external drive.
