The Witcher Game, Developed by Molasses Flood, Appears to be Open-World

Not much is known about the multiplayer Witcher game developed by CD Projekt studio The Molasses Flood, but according to a new job posting, it will be an open-world title. Codenamed Project Sirius, the upcoming title is just one of several upcoming games set in the world of Butters, and it appears to draw from CD Projekt Red’s previous work.

Polish developer Andrzej Sapkowski’s adaptations of the Witcher novels have provided players with many memorable dark fantasy RPG experiences. This is especially true for 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which entered the public consciousness as one of the most recognized games of the last decade and a trademark of open-world design. Since then, aside from the Netflix TV adaptations, The Witcher has been mostly quiet, but future games, including Project Sirius, will remedy that.

Details of The Molasses Flood’s Witcher game are still shrouded in mystery, but a job posting says that Sirius, like The Witcher 3 before it, will feature a large environment that players can explore at will. The Boston-based studio is looking for a Senior or Principal Level Designer for the Sirius project, and according to the job description in the ad, whoever takes on the role will be responsible for creating rooms set in the “Slavic open world” of The Witcher.

Since The Molasses Flood is a relatively small studio compared to CD Projekt Red, it’s hard to say whether the game’s map will approach the size of The Witcher 3’s massive open world. However, the job posting highlights the need to “create gameplay-rich and environmentally story-dense spaces,” so there’s a good chance fans can expect to find the narrative depth known for the Witcher games scattered throughout the world of Sirius, regardless of size.

Otherwise, the ad listing reaffirms Sirius’ status as a multiplayer-focused Witcher game, as candidates must have “experience building for a multiplayer game.” There was no mention of the single-player campaign, which is also said to be in the game, and it’s currently unclear if it’s still being worked on after Project Sirius development restarted earlier this year.

There are many ways a multiplayer Witcher game could go, and there’s no doubt that fans will be speculating as they wait for the upcoming games. In addition to Project Sirius, an open-world remake of the first Witcher game, Codenamed Project Canis Majoris, is being developed by Fool’s Theory. Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red is working on the fourth mainline entry in the series, codenamed Polaris, which will mark the beginning of an entirely new saga of Witcher games.
