“Killers of the Flower Moon” May Extend an Unfortunate DiCaprio and Scorsese Pattern

MOVIE NEWS – Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, seems poised to perpetuate a recurring theme seen in the actor-director duo’s collaborative efforts.

In their latest cinematic venture, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” the unfortunate pattern observed in Martin Scorsese’s films starring Leonardo DiCaprio is likely to continue. Known as one of Hollywood’s most in-sync actor-director teams, Scorsese and DiCaprio have crafted several iconic movies over the span of more than two decades. Their partnership, spanning six full-length films and one short film, reconvened for the 2023 release of “Killers of the Flower Moon,” with Scorsese at the helm and DiCaprio portraying Ernest Burkhart. The movie, based on David Grann’s book sharing its title, recounts the true events of the Osage murders.

Despite critical acclaim and a largely favorable reception, “Killers of the Flower Moon” has been somewhat eclipsed by other major films of the year, such as “Oppenheimer.” The movie’s female lead, Lily Gladstone, has garnered significant praise and numerous awards for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, including a Golden Globe for Best Female Actor in a Drama Motion Picture. Although Gladstone is a frontrunner for the Best Actress Oscar, it appears her male co-star in “Killers of the Flower Moon” may not share the same accolade.

Despite delivering a strong performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” DiCaprio’s prospects of clinching the Best Actor award at the 2024 Oscars appear slim. He was nominated for Best Male Actor in a Drama Motion Picture at the 2024 Golden Globes but lost to Cillian Murphy for “Oppenheimer.” Yet, even after this defeat, DiCaprio was considered a likely Oscar contender for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” until he was overlooked for a SAG Award nomination.

The absence of DiCaprio’s performance from the recent SAG Award nominations notably diminishes his chances of securing an Oscar win or even a nomination in 2024. Since the inception of the SAG Awards in 1995, only six actors have failed to win an Oscar in the same year after winning the SAG Award for Best Actor. Compounding DiCaprio’s dilemma is the fact that no actor has ever won an Oscar for Best Actor without at least a SAG Award nomination for the same role.

Given DiCaprio’s SAG snub and his loss at the Golden Globes, his chances of winning an Oscar for “Killers of the Flower Moon” are notably low. While it’s rare for an actor to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actor without a corresponding SAG nomination, it’s not entirely unprecedented. DiCaprio might still receive an Oscar nod, but it seems increasingly unlikely.

DiCaprio Has Yet to Win an Oscar for a Scorsese Film

Despite delivering some of his finest performances in Scorsese’s films, DiCaprio has not yet won an Oscar for any of their collaborations. He’s received Best Actor nominations for two roles in Scorsese movies, portraying real-life figures in both. His first nomination came in 2005 for his portrayal of Howard Hughes in “The Aviator,” followed by a 2014 nod for his role as Jordan Belfort in “The Wolf of Wall Street.” However, neither nomination resulted in an Oscar win.

DiCaprio’s first Oscar win came in 2016 for his role in “The Revenant,” a film not directed by Scorsese. He has been nominated since, but has yet to secure another victory, with his prospects of winning at the 2024 Oscars being virtually non-existent. While DiCaprio may still have a chance to win an Oscar for a Scorsese film in the future, it seems unlikely that “Killers of the Flower Moon” will be the project to break this ongoing pattern.
