Is Sony Working On An All-New PlayStation Handheld Console?! [VIDEO]

TECH NEWS – According to a recent rumour, Sony may be working on a brand new PlayStation handheld console that is not inspired by the old classics…

Sony is rumoured to be working on a new PlayStation handheld gaming device. Sony’s first handheld gaming system was the PlayStation Portable. Although it could not surpass the Nintendo DS in terms of sales, it was still quite successful. The Sony PSP was followed by the PlayStation Vita in 2012, but unfortunately, Sony’s second handheld game system fell short of its predecessor. The PS Vita boasted significant performance and some quality games, but its sales were a fraction of the PSPs’.

Many assumed that Sony would be out of the handheld gaming market with the demise of the PS Vita, and so far, this has been the case, but according to a prominent leaker, the gaming giant may be planning a new handheld console.

Popular YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead has posted a video claiming that the Japanese company is working on a new handheld gaming system. According to the video, PlayStation has already paid AMD to manufacture the device. But development is still at a very early stage. It might not actually happen. The device is rumoured to run PS4 games potentially and maybe even PS5 games that will receive a particular patch. It could work more like a Steam Deck than something like the PSP or PS Vita, so Sony doesn’t have to make games specifically for the new device.

A new Sony PlayStation handheld development would seem logical

Sony has already attempted to allow PlayStation gamers to play PS4 and PS5 games on their handheld consoles. A tool called PlayStation Portal uses streaming to provide PS gamers with at least some portability to access their PS4 and PS5 libraries. However, it has some obvious drawbacks that a dedicated Steam Deck-like handheld could solve.

While some may be disappointed that Sony’s new handheld if it exists, won’t necessarily include exclusive games, it’s in line with the latest industry trends – it would effectively be PlayStation’s answer to the Nintendo Switch and Valve’s Steam Deck.

Time will tell if the rumoured PlayStation handheld is real or not. But the move would make a lot of sense. The PlayStation Portal has already proven to be quite popular, so there is a proven demand for playing modern PlayStation games on a handheld device. Such a device would not limit Sony from continuing to develop the PlayStation 6 either. The latter will presumably be a traditional home console and will offer the performance associated with it.
