Avowed: Will Obsidian Use The Mortal Kombat 1 Twist?

The studio used this twist in Pillars of Eternity, a previous IP from Obsidian Entertainment.

We’re going to spoil a little bit about Pillars of Eternity. Avowed will be the studio’s next game, and it will be a first-person RPG set in the dark fantasy world of Pillars of Eternity, with familiar locations and story elements from there. However, the studio should consider taking the approach of NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat 1, which rebooted the timeline and world of the franchise. As a result, for example, Liu Kang became a fire god, while the role of veteran villain Shao Kahn was significantly reduced.

Pillars of Eternity (released in two parts in 2015 and 2018) presented an epic tale of the ancient gods and their secrets, shedding light on soul-powered magic and the life cycles of the land of Eora. However, at the end of the second part, Obsidian threw a huge twist in the players’ faces: Eothas, one of the living gods of Eora, whose incarnation started from the protagonist’s home (so the protagonist followed the god’s big steps in the main quest), announced that he would break the soul cycle that would change Eora’s existence and afterlife, only to be denied the result by a big cliffhanger. This was probably the impetus for many players to swear when the studio’s game ended that way…

If Avowed is going to be a prequel story, or has nothing to do with Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, then it wouldn’t be that interesting, because the divine action seen in PoE II is such a big change that it would have to be revealed, and thus the world and story could be rebooted, similar to what was seen in Mortal Kombat 1. Additionally, this would create a new entry point for players unfamiliar with the franchise, with Avowed coming to Xbox Series and PC.

Except it’s all up to Obsidian, not us.
