Dave Bautista’s Wild West Fantasy: From Sci-Fi Star to Cowboy

MOVIE NEWS – Dave Bautista’s latest fantasy film has bombed at the box office, but it gave him the chance to chase a long-time dream: starring in a western. The Guardians of the Galaxy star is a huge Clint Eastwood fan, and now he’s trying to follow in his footsteps—starting with In the Lost Lands.

Can In the Lost Lands really be considered a western? Dave Bautista, who co-stars with Milla Jovovich in Paul W.S. Anderson’s latest film, certainly believes so. In a recent interview, he revealed that while filming this epic fantasy movie, he was channeling his admiration for Clint Eastwood. However, despite its ambitious vision, the film has had a disappointing theatrical release in the U.S.

“A Western in a Fantasy World”

Based on a short story by George R.R. Martin, In the Lost Lands follows a queen who, desperate to find the secret of true love, sends the powerful witch Gray Alys (Jovovich) into the Lost Lands to retrieve a magical power. She is accompanied by a mysterious hunter, Boyce (Bautista), who helps her battle dark and deadly creatures. The film takes viewers into a dangerous and eerie world, which, according to Bautista, shares key elements with classic Western films.

“When I first read the script, with all that tense narration at the beginning, I immediately saw it as a Western. It takes place in a fantasy setting, but it still feels like a Western. I’ve always wanted to play a cowboy, so during filming, I kept thinking about Clint Eastwood. Do you remember his half-closed eyes? That quiet, mysterious way of acting, saying very little but commanding every scene? I loved that, and I was absolutely inspired by him.” — Discussing Film

However, Anderson’s film wasn’t enough to satisfy Bautista’s desire to step into the Wild West, and he hopes to one day make a full-fledged Western—his own version of Once Upon a Time in the West. “Those are the kind of movies I love.” And we’re right there with him—so let’s see if he gets the chance to bring his cowboy dreams to life. In the Lost Lands will hit Spanish theaters on April 25. In the U.S., it debuted with just over $1 million in its opening weekend—far below expectations for a film that reportedly cost $55 million to produce, setting it up as a major box office failure.
