What Is Up With The Wolf Among Us 2?

The Wolf Among Us 2 development has been very quiet for a long time, and while it has shown signs of life recently, we continue to watch with concern as the sequel to 2013’s The Wolf Among Us struggles to materialize.

Telltale’s episodic adaptation of Bill Willingham’s comic book was a success, but for years the studio had been wondering whether or not to move forward with a sequel. Finally, in 2017, it decided to begin work on The Wolf Among Us 2, originally scheduled for 2018 and then 2019. Only in the meantime, the original iteration of Telltale closed down. Still, the name was resurrected under LCG Entertainment, and at The Game Awards 2019, it was announced that development on the game was back on track.

At The Game Awards 2022, we saw a video of the game, so perhaps we were right to hope that a sequel to Bigby’s story might be in our hands in 2023. Then came the layoffs, and Telltale confirmed to IGN that development on The Wolf Among Us 2 will continue. Deck Nine (where the working environment is not the best; something we wrote about recently) was originally a development partner (The Expanse: The Telltale Series was also a joint venture), and 20% of the staff there were laid off (at Telltale, “most” were laid off). This affected development on Deck Nine, but Telltale confirmed that work on the game will continue in-house.

But fewer developers are working on it, so they are more pressured. Who knows, the game may still be in pre-production after years of silence, and given the state of both studios, there is little reason to be optimistic, so there is little point in guessing when The Wolf Among Us 2 will be released.

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are slowly being dropped from the target platforms, and perhaps the Nintendo Switch could be added to the list…
