Still no Profit for Alan Wake 2!

As Remedy Entertainment’s game is not available on Steam (yet), the Finnish studio can’t show a positive balance for the long-awaited sequel, but they think that was part of the plan.

Tero Virtala, CEO of Remedy Entertainment, wrote in his annual report for the first three months of the year that although Alan Wake 2 had sold 1.3 million copies by the beginning of February, the company had only managed to recoup most of its marketing and development costs. Not the whole amount, just a bigger part! It’s no wonder that the Finns posted an operating loss of €2.1 million for the first quarter of 2024, although it should be added that they bought back the Control IP from 505 Games during this period…

Virtala isn’t worried about the situation, as he sees Alan Wake 2 sales continuing to make decent progress despite the higher average price. They don’t have royalties from sales yet, but that bar has already been jumped by Alan Wake Remastered, as well as Control, which contributed to Remedy receiving more royalties than last year. The first Alan Wake remaster got off to a similarly difficult start in terms of royalties, so there is no cause for concern.

According to Virtala, Remedy is considering either self-publishing the games for the Control and Alan Wake IPs, or looking for a partner again so they don’t have to play the role of publisher (in the case of Alan Wake 2, Epic Games Publishing did that and funded the game’s development). The Finnish company says they will make more money and increase operating profits this year, and will provide more details when they know more about the business model and possible deals for Control 2 and the multiplayer Control spin-off codenamed Condor.

The exclusivity of the Epic Games Store will therefore reduce PC sales somewhat.
