Will Capcom Announce Resident Evil 9 Soon?

The Japanese company may not have delayed the next installment of the Resident Evil franchise after all, as a rumor has surfaced that contradicts previous rumors, courtesy of a highly reliable insider.

Resident Evil 9 is in the works, no doubt about it. It will probably use the RE neXt engine, or REX engine, and this is what a leaker wrote. Dusk Golem hasn’t always been accurate about Silent Hill and Resident Evil, but he tweeted about RE 9 in several tweets, which we’ve rewritten into a more readable format.

“I have good news/rumors to share about Resident Evil 9. The possible delay I heard murmurs about can be put aside. RE9 should be revealed pretty soon & released next year. If what I heard earlier is true, it should be in January. It’ll have been in development for about seven years. I haven’t heard January 2025 now, just a date I’ve heard before, they’re probably still aiming for it, but you never know in game development.

I won’t leak/rumor any other details about the game, just let Capcom do their thing and let them surprise people. Just to explain something, Resident Evil 9 started early development in early 2018 as a possible Resident Evil 8. Village started development as RE8, then became a spin-off title, then finally became Resident Evil 8 again. That game eventually became Resident Evil 9, and yes, RE8 and RE9 were in development at the same time.

Resident Evil games are usually greenlit in batches and planned out over a few years to keep the series “almost annual”. As we’ve mentioned a few times before, there was a funny period in 2018 where Resident Evil 2/3/4 Remake, Resident Evil: Village, and Resident Evil 9 were all in development at the same time. Something similar happened recently, as another batch of Resident Evil games were greenlit in early 2023. Resident Evil 9 has the biggest budget and the longest development time of any RE game to date, and I’ve previously described it as “ambitious”. None of that last part is new, it’s stuff I’ve been repeating for years,” Dusk Golem wrote.

So we’ll probably see a reveal in June, and the game could have an open-world design similar to Dragon’s Dogma 2. It could be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox series and PC in early 2025, but it’s not official!
