Will the Nintendo Switch 2 Support 60+ FPS?

Nintendo’s next generation console will reportedly be capable of up to 60+ frames per second, so it won’t lag behind the PlayStation 5 and Xbox series in that regard.

A well-known Nintendo data miner, OatmealDome, has taken a look at the latest version of the NintendoWare Bezel Engine. This is the game that powers the recently released Endless Ocean Luminous. He discovered that the engine now supports up to 240 FPS. This is an interesting change because the Nintendo Switch can’t do that: it can only do a quarter of that, which is sixty frames per second, from a platform that’s been out for over seven years.

So the Nintendo Switch 2 (not an official name yet!) may support 240 FPS, but it’s not certain that it will. If it does, it might only be able to do so at a very low resolution. But there’s also the possibility of 40 FPS, 120 Hz modes that we’ve already seen on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox series. Since we’ve heard that the console coming after the Switch will support Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology, we can expect the new platform to bring us 60+ FPS when docked.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was last reported to be a conservative hardware evolution, capable of 4 TFLOPS of processing power when docked. That puts it almost on par with the PlayStation 4 Pro (Sony’s console is slightly more powerful), but it could leave the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One behind. In terms of size and format, it will probably be similar to the current Nintendo Switch, and the Pro controller available now will also be usable on the Japanese company’s next platform, which is even rumored to have a different release date (some say late 2024, others early 2025).

Nintendo’s next console has yet to be announced, so anything we hear about it should be treated as a rumor for now.
