Will the New Tomb Raider be Open-World?

It’s been a while since the game from Crystal Dynamics was announced, and now there are rumors about what Lara Croft’s new adventure might be like, and it’s not long to wait.

It’s been over two years since Crystal Dynamics announced the new Tomb Raider game. It’s not using the studio’s Foundation engine, but Unreal Engine 5 (but that team isn’t the only one to ditch the home-grown technology for Epic Games’ engine; CD Projekt RED is also developing with UE5, not REDengine). The publisher will be Amazon, and the company wants a transmedia universe: they want games, movies, and TV shows all tied together in the franchise.

A movie insider, V Scooper, got new details about the game. According to him, it will be an open world game, with Lara exploring large areas by parachute and motorcycle. If all goes well, it will be released in the summer of 2025. He also mentioned the environment, a possible rival faction, and gameplay details: “A natural disaster strikes northern India, revealing the ruins and artifacts of the ancient emperor Ashoka. Lara must strategically battle the Society of Raiders and other rivals for these powerful relics. The Society of Raiders are inspired by Lara, but are unaffiliated and may have opposing agendas. This also relates to a new feature based on recruiting teams and allies to strategically help you in missions and defeat rivals. There’s an emphasis on a new non-lethal combat option.”

So there will be a team of younger raiders, something we’ve been hearing from Colin Moriarty (former IGN editor, Kinda Funny co-founder) for almost two years now. According to Miller Ross, another movie insider, the project has been in development longer than many people think, and is coming much earlier than Perfect Dark (which Crystal Dynamics is working on with The Initiative). The new Tomb Raider should be revealed at the Summer Game Fest in early June.

All of this is unofficial.
