Gex Trilogy: Still no Word on When the TV Fan Gecko is Coming [VIDEO]

Square Enix has inexplicably retained the IP rights to Gex (as the publisher’s name appears in the credits), and Limited Run Games is using its proprietary Carbon Engine to modernize the Gex, which has been neglected (and perhaps now forgotten) for over two decades.

Carbon Engine is a developer toolkit for creating emulation-based ports of classic games to modern hardware. So essentially, it’s not remakes or remasters of three Crystal Dynamics games that are being made, but emulations for all the relevant platforms Gex is coming to. That’s more than nothing, of course, but we can expect more than that, can’t we?

The first part of Gex (as a 2D game!) was released for 3DO, PC, SEGA Saturn and PS1, and the Gecko was unofficially the musketeer of the 3DO. The sequel, Gex: Enter the Gecko, was released for PS1, PC, Nintendo 64, and Game Boy Color, but the GBC port was a 2D side-scrolling platformer because a 3D platformer wouldn’t work on the handheld. The final part of the trilogy, Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko, was only available on three platforms, as it skipped the PC and was only available on PS1, N64, and GBC (and the original 3D platforming style was not available on Nintendo’s handheld this time either, due to technical limitations). In 2022, a prototype, or rather a demo, of the concept for the planned fourth installment surfaced. Gex Jr. has been hidden on a burned CD for over two decades, and you can download it from Of course, this is not a complete game.

Crystal Dynamics is no longer part of Square Enix, so it’s a bit strange that the rights to Gex stayed with them. Anyway, Gex Trilogy will be available for pre-order sometime this fall. The release date is not known yet, only the target platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch. Yes, Xbox One is not listed.
