The Realms Rebuilt update, coming in a few days, will take inspiration from both Palworld and Enshrouded, and will almost completely overhaul Nightingale.
New weapons, spells, dungeons, and bosses? That’s what you’d expect from a major update. Restrictions on player bases will be changed, the progression system will be overhauled, you’ll be able to put hats on cats… and the core quest line will be completely overhauled. There will also be story worlds to visit, and they will not be randomly generated (a la No Man’s Sky), but handcrafted. So there will be a lot more structure to our adventures, and the early part of the game (where we learn the basics of survival and crafting) will be completely overhauled. Aaryn Flynn, the studio director working on Nightingale, told PCGamer:
“Ultimately, what we realized about the procedural nature of the realms is that the procedural generation and the procedural assembly of these things is really all in the service of telling stories and letting players discover stories. When you peel it back, when you realize that’s why we built all this technology and did all this, to tell stories, then you can ask yourself, “Well, are we doing that? Are we succeeding at it? And we’re only moderately successful at it. We went through Enshrouded, Palworld, V Rising, we went through a lot of the bigger, pretty successful survival crafting games, not just in terms of sales, but in terms of player perception. And it was really the structure that stood out as something that they offered that we did not.
Players told us that they wanted to be creative and push the limits of the building system, but those limits were too small, too narrow. And so we rebuilt the whole technology around that. We got a fair amount of criticism about the weak boss fights. They were all pretty much variations on a theme. So we came up with a bunch of unique bosses that you fight. The original survival and crafting systems were very functional, but I would say the big lesson there was that we focused too much on tutorials and not nearly enough on hooking, on really, really engaging players.
Players ultimately need to be engaged and they need to feel like they’re in love with this world and we put up too many barriers in the name of educating them on how a system works or how a gameplay mechanic works. We put up too many barriers for them to actually fall in love with the world. And so hopefully this new approach will do a better job of that,” Flynn said.
So the rivals could be a big boost for the game, which isn’t a bad thing. The Realms Rebuilt update will be released on September 12.
