A minor controversy has erupted online regarding the use of PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 logos. Asha Sharma has responded to the backlash.
In response to negative fan reactions, Sharma called the decision to feature logos of rival platforms in the upcoming showcase a mistake. On Friday, the Xbox leadership team discussed plans for the Xbox Games Showcase, which is set to take place on June 7. During the official Xbox podcast, Matt Booty, the director of content, was asked if the showcase would continue to be transparent about which platforms the featured games would be released on.
Typically, first-party game showcases like Nintendo Direct and PlayStation State of Play do not mention rival platforms in the trailers for the featured games. This means that viewers must find out later which consoles the games will actually be released on. However, Xbox has recently broken this trend by shifting to a multiplatform release strategy, clearly indicating when featured games will also be released on PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch 2.
On the Xbox podcast, Booty confirmed that the transparency policy remains in effect. They will clearly indicate which platforms a game will be released on, and they intend to continue this practice. Booty believes that their system works well and that information is clearly communicated during the showcase. However, not all Xbox fans were satisfied with Booty’s comments. Some suggested that the Game Showcase should focus on Xbox platforms instead of mentioning rival consoles.
Xbox will continue to show competitive platform logos at upcoming Xbox Games Showcase.
I feel like the bare minimum expectation many had was for Xbox to really focus on their own platform at least for the time of the Showcase.https://t.co/KZYu8p8gR1 pic.twitter.com/zozeVBDnkf

Seeing the feedback on logos. It was a miss, and I own it. We are talking about how we adjust for future XBOX shows.

The renowned Xbox influencer Klobrille wrote that many expected Xbox to at least focus on its own platform during the Showcase. This sentiment was significant enough to catch the attention of Xbox’s new leadership. On Friday evening, Sharma issued an apology and stated that the guidelines would be reviewed. She acknowledged the feedback about the logos. A mistake was made, and she takes responsibility. They are now discussing how to revamp future Xbox presentations.
I’m not sure pivoting based on the whims of a few militant fans is the best idea.

Is doing what Sony does really any more helpful to gamers, though? Meaning, pretend a game doesn’t exist on other platforms on your Showcase when in fact it does. Who does that help?
Exclusives are another matter, but if it’s multiplatform, why try to convince anyone otherwise?

However, not everyone agrees with this potential shift in direction. GLHF’s content director, Kirk McKeand, wrote that changing course based on the whims of a few militant fans might not be the best idea. IGN reporter Ryan McCaffrey asked, will it really help gamers if they do what Sony is doing? (Pretending at the presentation that a game will not be available on other platforms when it will be.)
