Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: We Won’t Be Without Generative AI!

This game will feature assets created using generative artificial intelligence, such as skins and menu icons.

Call of Duty is returning this year with Modern Warfare 4, which comes as no surprise to anyone (though it is surprising that Microsoft is still pushing for an annual release despite having previously considered the opposite). This latest installment is significant because it marks the long-awaited transition to current-generation hardware, with no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One ports. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will also be available on the Nintendo Switch 2, and according to Infinity Ward, the game is already running well on the platform. However, this excitement may soon fade as the game’s Steam page confirms the return of generative AI content.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Steam includes the same statement regarding AI-generated content as its predecessor. According to the statement, Infinity Ward and Activision use generative AI tools to develop certain in-game elements. However, no further details are provided. Fans of Call of Duty are likely already familiar with what to expect. Given the series’ history, the calling cards and other in-game graphics will likely be AI-generated, as this statement appears on Steam.

Some fans may be disappointed that Call of Duty is relying on generative AI content once again, despite the huge backlash it received last year. However, Activision and its teams are far from the only ones in the industry doing this. Rumor has it that nearly every modern studio uses generative AI. The big question, then, is whether these AI-generated elements will stand out as they did in last year’s installment, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

Meanwhile, Modern Warfare 4 has received overwhelmingly positive feedback because Infinity Ward took fan feedback into account regarding in-game movement, multiplayer map design, and other issues.
