Is Astro Bot the ‘Super Mario’ of PlayStation? Team Asobi Has a Surprising Answer!

Astro Bot Creators Respond to Super Mario Comparisons, Calling It a High Compliment.

“We obviously take it as a compliment. It is a compliment, and it’s great to be considered at that level. So yeah, it’s a good thing,” said a Team Asobi representative.

For many gamers, Astro Bot is not only one of the standout games of the year but also one of the best platformers of the last decade. Because of this, players often compare Team Asobi’s title to Nintendo’s iconic 3D Super Mario games, such as 3D World, Odyssey, Galaxy, and others. Until now, the developers had not publicly commented on this comparison, but it seems the Japanese team is quite flattered by it.

Team Asobi views any association of their game with Nintendo’s exclusives, especially the Mario Bros. series, as a compliment. In a recent interview with El Español (via Vandal), a spokesperson for the team shared their reaction to Astro Bot being nicknamed the “Super Mario of PlayStation.” They stated, “Obviously we take it as a compliment. We have a lot of respect for games of that caliber.”

“It’s a compliment, and it’s great to be considered at that level. So yeah, it’s a good thing,” they continued. The team also emphasized that their video games are designed to leverage PlayStation’s unique features. “From our perspective, our games are based on PlayStation technology. This game, for example, is heavily designed for the DualSense. We feel like we’re creating something unique to PlayStation that you can’t find anywhere else,” they added.

Astro Bot’s Growing Importance for Sony

Just a few days ago, it was reported that the CEO of PlayStation views Astro Bot as a crucial title for Sony, particularly as the company aims to focus more on the family gaming market. For this reason, the studio confirmed that there are more surprises in store for Astro Bot fans. Soon, a free DLC will be available, offering players the chance to rescue new VIP robots, tackle challenging levels, and explore additional scenarios and speedrun phases.
