Larian Studios: A Problem of Over-Ambition? Baldur’s Gate 3’s Lead Developer Has Spoken!

“We were made for making large, ambitious RPGs and to try new stuff,” admits Swen Vincke, head of Larian.

It has been known for a long time that the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3 are working on two big RPGs at the same time. However, Larian Studios still hasn’t released the 2023 GOTY fantasy RPG, which is waiting for players with exciting updates. However, most of the developers are busy with other projects that will be released in several years. Nevertheless, the ambitions of the Belgian studio are very high, and sometimes, they get overwhelmed by wanting to give more than they are capable of.

Larian Studios wants to release one game before the other and devote more resources to it than the second RPG. However, making both games is a challenge and a complex task for the company, as confirmed by Swen Vincke, CEO of the studio and director of Baldur’s Gate 3: “We had some people who were dedicated to the other one, and they just got swallowed by the ambitions of the one that we want to release first. So we will try and do it concurrently, but we have to figure out how to leave people alone,” he said (via Gamesradar).

Perhaps one solution to alleviate the situation is to curb their ambitions.

However, the developer said: “We always say we do [want to rein in our ambitions], but then we start thinking, and the machine is meant to make large games. We were made for making large, ambitious RPGs and to try new stuff” – admits Vincke, who resigns himself to his fate, that his games must be at least as big as Baldur’s Gate 3.

The next games from Larian Studios are huge

The boss of Larian Studios emphasized that they already know what they want to put on the table, so they cannot hold back their ambitions. Not even if the development, therefore, runs into problems every step of the way. “One of the core problems – it’s not really a problem – but one of the core problems to do what you’re suggesting is that we actually know what we want from our gameplay systems, how to evolve them, how to do new things… and they’re all big” – he concluded the conversation.
