Path of Exile 2: The Class That Rules the Metagame

Path of Exile 2 now features six classes, but an overwhelming 43% of the RPG’s top 1,000 players have chosen the same one. The Stormweaver Sorceress, especially with her Lightning specialization, dominates the charts.

Action RPGs invite us to face hordes of enemies while nurturing a character into a near-divine warrior. Path of Exile 2 thrives on this premise, with Grinding Gear Games leveraging their expertise to ensure players feel the weight of their decisions as they dive into one of six classes now available. Among them, the Stormweaver Sorceress clearly stands out.

According to MeinMMO, over 43% of the top 1,000 leaderboard players have opted for the Sorceress’ Lightning specialization, significantly outpacing other choices like the Summoner (Monk) at 15% and the Gemling Legionary (Mercenary) at 10.4%. For the top 100 players, this preference becomes even starker, with nearly half choosing the Lightning-focused build, raising serious questions about game balance.

Why is the Lightning Sorceress so dominant? Her command of elemental forces—ice, fire, and lightning—provides unparalleled versatility. Beginners use skills like Herald of Ice for efficient area clearing, while advanced players favor builds like the Archmage, flooding maps with electric attacks.

The real strength lies in her mechanics. By focusing on devastating ranged attacks, the Lightning Sorceress eliminates enemies swiftly and safely. In contrast, melee classes face higher risks and a slower pace due to their reliance on close-quarters combat.

However, this popularity hasn’t come without criticism. Players have voiced concerns about enemies attacking from off-screen, mirroring some advantages the Sorceress enjoys. These debates have highlighted potential combat imbalances and sparked discussions about whether adjustments are needed to level the playing field. As the game evolves, it remains to be seen if this dominance will persist or if the developers will intervene.
