Could More PlayStation Studios Adopt Decima Technology Used in Horizon and Death Stranding?

The Decima engine could be brought in-house at more Sony studios, potentially making development easier for others.

Decima was developed by Guerrilla Games. It was used in Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West. The first “external” user was Kojima Productions. Although Hideo Kojima’s studio is not part of PlayStatuin Studios, the Japanese genius borrowed the technology from the Dutch studio to make Death Stranding. The sequel, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, coming to PlayStation 5 later this year, will also use Decima.

Twisted Voxel noticed that Astrid Huntjens, Senior Producer at Guerrilla Games, listed her experience on LinkedIn, and here she mentioned that her responsibilities at Decima include communication management and relationship management with other Sony studios. In other words, if another PlayStation team wanted Decima, they could apply for the technology through Huntjes. In this way, Guerrilla Games has extended its support to other studios.

But who can use Decima? Bend Studio could be one of them. The team behind Days Gone (and much earlier Bubsy 3D and Syphon Filter) could be among them. The studio has an unannounced project and Matthew Seymour hinted at it on LinkedIn. Seymour was previously a senior game designer at Bend Studio and worked on the unannounced game until his departure in 2024. He mentioned Decima among the tools he used, so it’s likely that Bend has already started using Guerrilla’s engine.

This is understandable, because if you have an in-house developed technology that is fit for purpose, you can save on costs and not have to line the pockets of Epic Games, for example, if they were to use Unreal Engine 5. In the case of Microsoft, there was a comment that id Software’s id Tech could be in a similar position, but nothing came of it…
