Is the PC Leading the Gaming Industry in Sales?

While console sales don’t look very good, PC sales are outperforming them.

Matthew Ball, CEO of Epyllion (an investment strategy firm) has released an early version of a presentation. The title of the presentation is “The State of Video Gaming in 2025”. He has taken data from IDG, Newzoo and Circana (all three are market research firms) to summarize international market trends in the gaming industry. We saw growth between 2011 and 2021, but since then growth has slowed. According to the analysis, PC gaming is a bright spot for continued growth, as it now leads non-mobile monetization, rather than console sales. On the PC, nearly $50 billion more will be spent on PC and console games by 2024 than in 2011.

Since 2021, console growth has slowed, which is understandable when you consider sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Compared to the previous generation of consoles, the current console has sold nearly 7 million fewer units so far! Meanwhile, PC sales have grown 20% since 2021, according to Epyllion, while console results have stagnated. PC growth has been driven by computing advantages, according to the company: a much larger catalog of games, more backwards compatibility, easier access to web browsers, social platforms and live streaming software, and understandably, performance can be much higher on more powerful configurations.

PC momentum continues to grow with the release of console titles on PC, as well as portable PCs, SteamOS, and Roblox. Hundreds of millions of minors growing up on Roblox are unlikely to ask for a $500 console to play AAA games. But there’s little consensus on whether the console or PC market is bigger: in August 2023, Newzoo said console game sales generated $56.1 billion, while PC sales generated only $40 billion.

“IDG is typically considered the source of record for sales tracking in the industry, which is why I primarily relied on their estimate. If you look at Pelham Smithers, a private research agency/bank in the UK, which is what the Financial Times usually uses, and what Bloomberg uses (and actually puts through the Bloomberg terminal), they actually have PC as 50% bigger than console. IDC is relatively close to IDG, but not identical,” Ball told PC Gamer via email. Ball says there are some discrepancies. There may be discrepancies in tracking sales in China, and Ball says they are mainly at the AA/AAA level on PC.

As for the future of PC gaming, Ball said he’s confident in the still-strong growth advantages of the PC gaming market as outlined by Epyllion…

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
