How much does this improve the quality of Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, which was released in the summer of 2003 (and let’s face it, in a terrible state)?
Aspyr did a great job remastering the first three Tomb Raiders last year, and a modernization of the first three episodes of Core Design is coming out on February 14th. Only this time Aspyr is taking it a bit more seriously: content cut from Angel of Darkness, Core’s last Lara game, will be available in the remaster. More details can be found in a blog post from the studio.
They will be restoring the weapon of Kurtis Trent, another playable character from Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness. The Chirugai is a melee weapon similar to the Glaive seen in the 1980s sci-fi movie Krull. It is a metal disc with blades protruding from its circumference. Kurtis will be able to create a psychic armor around his body and will be able to sprint like Lara. When he’s stealthy, he’ll be able to shoot from behind a wall. These are modifications to Aspyr rather than cuts to content, but if it makes Kurtis a more fun character to play, then perhaps it’s understandable, although it’s questionable how seriously Aspyr takes the fact that Kurtis has huge untapped potential…
A cutout area will also be included in the remaster. This will be an unfinished training area that would have been on the Paris Back Streets level. This is where we would have learned the Commando Crawl. This has been restored by Aspyr, and they think we can choose to go this way or the way we went in the original game. Lara and Kurtis will have several cutscenes available again, Werner Von Croy’s notebook will be updated og, and Aspyr has also tinkered with inventory items. Rennes’ flea market and herbalist have also been redesigned to make them more useful. For example, you can buy silencers and laser sights if you collect euros.
However, we’d like to point out that the base game was just plain crap. We wonder how Aspyr can change that?
