Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced yet another change that won’t take effect until next year, so at least they’ve given us some time to prepare.
SIE didn’t go all out this time either, as the PlayStation Plus Essential offerings for February aren’t exactly anything to write home about: even though PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can get their hands on these games, it doesn’t look like Sony really dug into their wallets to at least put something really big (even an in-house first-party game) on the table for the shortest month of the year.
February’s pull title is Payday 3 (PlayStation 5), which didn’t exactly win over fans of cooperative bank robberies, as server glitches and a lack of content sent much of the audience rushing back to Payday 2 when Starbreeze’s game was released in September 2023. That says pretty much everything about how underwhelming it was, and in November, Mats Juhl, Starbreeze’s CFO and interim CEO, admitted that Payday 3 still hasn’t turned a profit…
The second title on our list is High on Life (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4), the smaller indie game of the month. It’s not that outstanding either. The third game is a remake of Pac-Man World Re-Pac (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4), which will be released in 2022. The platformer, which uses the Unity engine, is a bit of a niche title. And that brings us to the end of the list. But what about the change we mentioned at the beginning?
Starting in January 2026, SIE will remove PlayStation 4 titles from PlayStation Plus Monthly Games (= PlayStation Plus Essential) and the Game Catalog (= PlayStation Plus Extra, Premium) to focus solely on PlayStation 5 games. There may be some cross-gen titles after that, and occasionally something that was released on PlayStation 4 may pop up here and there. This is to encourage people who played on 2013 hardware to buy new hardware.
Games will be available from February 4 to March 3.
