Long-Awaited Just Cause Movie Finally Moves Forward

MOVIE NEWS – Hollywood has been on a roll with video game adaptations, thanks to the massive success of Sonic the Hedgehog, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and series like The Last of Us and Fallout. Several major franchises are making the leap to live-action, including Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, and The Legend of Zelda. However, one upcoming adaptation that may have slipped under the radar is Universal Pictures’ Just Cause movie, which was first announced last May. After months of silence, we finally have an update.

According to The Wrap, Universal has tapped screenwriter Aaron Rabin to bring Just Cause to the big screen. Rabin, best known for his work on Jack Ryan and Secret Invasion, will write the script for the action-packed adaptation based on the Square Enix video game franchise. The movie is set to be directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, the filmmaker behind Blue Beetle.

Though no release date has been confirmed, the project is already shaping up to be an explosive action spectacle. One of the most exciting aspects is the involvement of the 87 Eleven stunt team, the experts behind the John Wick franchise, ensuring Just Cause stays true to its over-the-top action roots. Meanwhile, David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, The Fall Guy) and Kelly McCormick are on board as producers through their 87North banner, which has a first-look deal with Universal.

What Is Just Cause?

Unlike some video game adaptations that dive into emotional narratives (The Last of Us, Bioshock), Just Cause is all about high-octane action and chaotic destruction. First released in 2006 by Avalanche Studios, the franchise follows Rico Rodriguez, a fearless operative tasked with toppling oppressive governments in the fictional island nation of San Esperito. Interestingly, the series’ name and concept are loosely inspired by the real-life U.S. invasion of Panama in 1989, known as Operation Just Cause.

The series has seen four installments so far, with the most recent entry, Just Cause 4, launching in 2018. While fans are split on which game reigns supreme, Just Cause 3 (2015) is widely considered the franchise’s high point. The series became famous for its destructible environments, as Rico could blow up military installations, hijack planes, and engage in wild stunts with his signature grappling hook and wingsuit.

If executed well, Just Cause has the potential to be one of the most insane action movies in years. With its fast-paced gameplay, extreme stunts, and no-holds-barred destruction, the film will need to balance practical effects with just the right amount of CGI to capture the spirit of the games. Given how the Fast & Furious franchise has continually pushed the limits of action cinema, it’s not hard to imagine Just Cause pulling off similar bombastic sequences.
