Sony Scrapped Plans for Resistance 4: What Happened? [VIDEO]

Sony didn’t really want to continue the franchise that started as the launch title of the PlayStation 3, but it was up to the developers!

Before working on Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Wolverine and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Insomniac Games was known for the Resistance IP. Ted Price, the studio’s founder and former CEO, spoke during the Kinda Funny Gamescast about how the team would have loved to make Resistance 4. He brought this up in response to a question about what project Insomniac Games had that Sony didn’t pick up:

“Resistance 4. We pitched that and it was a wonderful concept. It just didn’t work out in terms of timing and market opportunity, but it was the result of a lot of Insomniac team members being passionate about continuing the story. I think Resistance set up a really cool alternate history where anything can happen with the Chimera and where they go and what their origins are. We spent a lot of time working on the backstory and kind of brainstorming where we could take it in the future and I personally love this franchise.

I was lucky enough to be the creative director on the first few Resistance games and I will remember many, many moments, good and bad. When it comes to development, it taught all of us a lot about how to rise above some pretty heavy and some pretty difficult situations. Fortunately, we love the fan reaction and we know that fans ask pretty regularly if we’re going to do another Resistance. There’s no answer to that, but I will say that we pitched Resistance 4 and it was cool,” Price said.

But is there any chance that Resistance 4 will somehow become a reality later on? Price answered that as well: “Honestly, I hope so. I’d love to see that story continue, it’s near and dear to my heart. There are so many cool things in it. […] Resistance 3 was meant to end that chapter of the franchise in the same way that we ended it with Capelli, closing a lot of loops on various smaller story elements. We wanted to do that so that we would have more options in the future, whether we wanted to do more Resistance games or go in a different direction. When you work on a franchise for a long time, it’s nice to have the opportunity to move on to something else. At the same time, it’s nice to be able to come back to it. Fortunately, because we’re part of Sony and Sony owns the intellectual property of Resistance, we’ll always have the opportunity to revisit Resistance. If it works out again, I’ll be pretty excited as a fan.”

The last installment of Resistance was released for PlayStation Vita in 2012 (Nihilistic Software was behind Resistance: Burning Skies). Insomniac Games is now working on Marvel IP, but it doesn’t come cheap (we learned from the ransomware attack on the studio that Sony reportedly paid Disney $109 million for the Spider-Man IP), so if Sony eventually vows to cut costs, it could return to its own IP in time. Resistance is one of them.

The days of the PS3 are long gone.
