Bob Gale knows something, and since he was involved in the three movies that are still enjoyable to this day, maybe he has some insight into what’s going on.
He was good in the Back to the Future movies, but he hasn’t really had anything that strong in games. The story of Marty McFly (often referred to as Chicken) and Doc Brown became exciting (especially when their actions led to alternate timelines), so it’s no wonder there’s interest in sequels or remakes of the movies. There was also a short-lived animated series…but who remembers that?
Bob Gale, the writer of Back to the Future, in an interview with Cleveland.com (linked as an archived source, as the original is behind a paywall), answered the question of what his next project for the franchise would be: “We have a chance to do a new video game based on Back to the Future. I don’t want to tell you any more than that because I’m not allowed to, but it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Knock on wood, it will happen. Of course, 2025 is the 40th anniversary of the original movie. We’re planning some events, and there’s a documentary in post-production about the making of the musical,” Gale said.
The team behind the movies is very protective of the IP, so it rarely gets out of their hands. Telltale, for example, got it (and that adaptation wasn’t that bad), but the list of bad game adaptations goes on and on (for example, the NES adaptation of the first part is one, but the other NES games that adapted the second and third parts aren’t much better). Gale’s comments don’t reveal whether something will be made for desktop consoles and PC or VR, as the identity of the developers is also unclear.
So all we can do is wait until something is announced. Gale’s comments are optimistic, that much we can say.
