PS5 Sales Surge in Japan: Monster Hunter Wilds Drives Over 100,000 Units Sold in a Week

The PlayStation 5 has experienced a significant sales boost in Japan, surpassing 100,000 units sold in a single week, largely due to the successful launch of Monster Hunter Wilds.

For the first time in a considerable period, PS5 sales in Japan have exceeded the 100,000-unit mark within a week.

This surge is attributed to the release of Monster Hunter Wilds and a temporary price reduction, leading to a remarkable 108,978 units sold. The standard disc model PS5 accounted for the majority of these sales. Specifically, the PS5 sold 75,070 units, the PS5 Digital Edition sold 26,362 units, and the PS5 Pro sold 7,546 units.

Capcom’s latest title – which achieved over eight million units sold globally within just three days – sold 601,179 units on the PS5 in Japan. It’s important to note that this figure only includes physical sales; digital sales data, which have been increasing in popularity in Japan, are not included.

For context, Monster Hunter: World sold 1.2 million units during its opening week, while the PS4 sold 140,000 units in the same period. However, it’s worth noting that the ratio of digital sales has increased in Japan over the past several years.

Overall, this has been an exceptional week for the PS5. This marks its largest physical software launch to date, and the hardware sales figures are equally impressive. It will be interesting to observe how long the Monster Hunter effect sustains the system’s momentum and what the next major hit will be for the platform.
